作者簡介：

W.S.毛姆（William Somerset Maugham），1874—1965，英國著名小說家，劇作家，散文家。曾先後就讀於坎特伯雷的國王學校和德國海德堡鬧裂大學，後到倫敦聖托馬斯醫院學醫，並取得外科醫師資格。

他的首部長篇小說《蘭貝斯的麗莎》於1897年發表。1915年，他的傑作《人性的枷鎖》問世，1919年《月亮與六便士》的出版確立了他作為長篇小說家的地位。他的其他著作有長篇小說《刀鋒》、《面紗》，旅行液閉閉札記《在中國屏風上》，及各種散文、短篇小說集等。1903—1933年期間，他創作了近30部劇本，深受觀眾歡迎。

毛姆被公認為20世紀在全世界范圍內流行最廣、最受歡迎的英國作家之一，被譽為「最會講故事的作家」。他的小說機智、幽默，常在譏諷中潛藏對人性的憐憫與同情。1952年，牛津大學授予他名譽博士學位。1954年，英王授予他「榮譽侍從」的稱號。

1）背景發生在1920年左右，男女主角在倫敦經由父母安排，舞會中相識，男主是細菌學博士,而女主是毛姆筆下非常熟悉的角色養尊處優，出入社交舞會的大小姐。女主為了快點逃離家庭迅速與男主結婚，跟隨來到中國；但英國習氣未改，不出意外的有了情人，為了懲罰和報復男主將其帶到了霍亂四起的桂林，霍亂時期的愛情才真正從此開始.....雖然是愛情故事，但毫不拖沓扭捏，反而節奏和感情都很真實。
