創作背景：

公木聯想到自己所創作的詩《烈士贊》，認為該詩和電影有關系，都是在寫英雄。在經歷一晚後，第二天他完成了歌詞創作。

該曲曲作者劉熾在拿到歌詞後並沒有馬上譜曲，而是拉著朋友打起撲克。而正當大家打在興頭上時，劉熾突然把牌往桌上一扔，回家謝絕一切打擾，一遍遍讀著歌詞，最後創作出曲譜。該曲是以內蒙古民歌《巴特爾陶陶呼》為藍本加以發展完成的。
