詹姆斯．霍納（James Horner），1953年8月14日生於美國加利福尼亞州洛杉磯市，但是在洛杉磯出生的他卻在英國成長，接受了很扎實的古典音樂教育，然後進入皇家音樂學院攻讀音樂作曲，師從倫敦皇家音樂學院古典音樂大師郭吉·李各逖（Gyorgi Ligeti）。然後再回到美國深造，先後在南加州大學取得作曲學位，又轉赴加州大學洛杉磯分校取得音樂碩士和博士學位。
詹姆斯．霍納於70年代末期轉入電影界，為美國電影學院及柔格· 克曼的新世界電影公司出品的一些低成本恐怖片或科幻片配樂。在80年代末期開始嶄露頭角，詹姆斯．霍納為動畫片《美國鼠譚》譜寫的歌曲《出門在外》（Somewhere Out There）不僅使他獲得奧斯卡和金球獎提名，更是勇奪該年度葛萊美「最佳歌曲」和「最佳電影插曲」雙料大獎，從而詹姆斯．霍納一舉成名。之後，他又以《燃情歲月》、《勇敢的心》、《阿波羅十三》等一系列風格迥異的電影配樂建立其創作領域的霸主地位。從踏入影視創作領域至今，詹姆斯．霍納以其唯美華麗、充滿詩意的配樂風格在樂壇獨樹一幟。
在1960年度的奧斯卡發獎儀式上，史詩巨片《賓虛傳》（Ben-Hur）的全體主創人員曾頻頻起立，先後11次登台領獎。1997年，他所創作的主題曲《我心依舊》乘著《泰坦尼克號》的風浪席捲了全球，在1998年3月下旬的第70屆奧斯卡頒獎現場，《泰坦尼克號》的主題音樂先後11次響起，伴隨著永恆、浪漫的旋律，該配樂也為詹姆斯．霍納贏得了該年的"奧斯卡"與"金球"兩項大獎。 音樂界評價他的獎項源於自我剽竊主義，但不管怎樣，他所創作的情感主題音樂以其優雅的旋律、強烈的情節暗示都受到了公眾及電影公司的認可。
對於電影音樂創作，霍納有幾個特別的概念，首先，他認為作曲家象畫家一樣，音樂只是作曲家的調色盤，音樂曲調，樂器類別，和表現格局都是這個調色盤上的顏色而已，兒曲家要讓畫作呈現什麼色彩，就會選擇最適當顏料上畫，素雅或繽紛，黑白或彩色，往往只在一念之間。
其次，他雖然靠《泰坦尼克號》賺了大錢，但是他卻認為面對古典交響樂和電影音樂的創作選擇，他會選擇交響樂，理由很簡單，作曲家可以被電影畫面感動得一把鼻涕一把眼淚，可是回支鍵盤上作曲的時候，根本不可以天馬行空去發揮，必須緊緊盯著電影畫面，數著秒針和底片格數，清清楚楚地計算出音樂的起承轉合力道。而且，電影導演留給音樂發揮的空間通常不過三五分鍾而已，音樂氣勢才要蘊釀上揚，馬上就得草草結束，實在不過癮。
霍納更趨勢指出，電影配樂家的角色就是以前古典音樂世界裡的宮廷樂師。宮廷樂師的功能就是創作和演出曲子娛樂主子，電影配樂師根本沒有自主權，音樂寫得再好，導演不喜歡，就得改寫，更慘的狀況就是立刻被換掉，一點尊嚴也沒有，只能把自己當成為五斗米折腰的樂師，任人使喚。
