《d小調托卡塔與賦格》原是一首管風琴曲。管風琴的音域寬廣，音色多變，音量極大，氣勢宏偉，曾有「樂器之王」之稱。最大的可高達數層樓，擁有五層鍵盤和上萬根樂管。巴赫最擅長演奏管風琴，其作品的音響構思幾乎都以此為基礎。這首樂曲是他管風琴作品的代表作之一，具有華麗的技巧、風格和雄偉的戲劇情節。據分析，它是作者在1704～1707年間專為阿恩士塔德的新管風琴創作的。由於管風琴的體積非常龐大，構造又相當復雜，無法搬上音樂會舞台，因此這部作品也就沒機會向廣大聽眾介紹。為此，美國指揮家斯托柯夫斯基把它改編成管弦樂曲，用豐富的器樂色彩，在音樂會舞台上重現了它的雄偉氣魄和深刻的意境。樂曲由一首托卡塔曲和一首賦格曲組成，前後兩部分的音樂形象十分統一，全都以同一個樂思作為基礎.

托卡塔自由、即興，就象一首表情誇張的宣敘調。賦格曲非常接近主調風格，沒有固定對題，也沒有橫向曲調線的復雜交織，特別是結尾部分，出現了一連串加有輝煌的走句式的和弦進行，好象又回到了一開始的托卡塔曲，進一步加強了整個樂曲的完整性和統一性。

《d小調托卡塔與賦格》是巴赫青年時代的代表作之一，後由波蘭作曲家斯托考夫斯基改編為管弦樂曲，並由波蘭鋼琴家、作曲家陶西格改編為鋼琴曲。樂曲採用了d小調，4/4拍。由下行旋律組成的慢板的引子飽滿而有力，為全曲宏偉的氣勢作了渲染和鋪墊；然後，樂曲奏出音響宏大的和弦，接著呈現出托卡塔主題，帶有戲劇性的成分；在托卡塔主題結束後，樂曲在上聲部出現賦格主題，採用與引子部分相同的音樂素材；隨後，賦格主題移至低聲部呈示，前後反復出現八次，音樂情緒逐步高漲；最後，樂曲再現托卡塔部分，以氣勢雄偉的尾聲結束。這里選用的是作品的管風琴演奏版。本作品曾被現代「情調鋼琴王子」理查德·克萊德曼引用，使之廣為流傳。
