據說在凱絲初入樂隊時，還發生過一些波折。樂隊主唱John Philips認為她的音線不高，無法與樂隊其他成員構成完美和聲，所以一直不同意她的加入。後來由於一次意外事故，凱絲的頭部被重物擊中，造成輕微腦震盪，住了幾天醫院後，她居然可以唱上去了！就這樣，媽媽凱絲(Mama Cass Elliot)成了新樂隊的一員。

1964年，樂隊在加州成立。當時的成員為John Phillips和妻子Michelle、Cass Elliott、Denny Doherty。1965年，樂隊受雇於Dunhill唱片公司，負責給公司旗下藝人伴唱。有感於該樂隊的努力工作和John Phillips超凡的作曲天賦——「California Dreaming」(加州之夢)，公司和他們簽了約。樂隊在1966年推出了單曲「California Dreaming」，在排行榜排名第4，共售出了100萬張。同年，「Monday,Monday」、「I Saw Her Again」都先後進入排行榜前5名。
